How to Live Like a Local When You Travel to New Destinations

Travel

24 Jun

After a few years of travel restrictions, the majority of Americans are planning to travel in 2022. If you’re one of them, you already have your travel plans set out, right?

You’re ready to do all of the popular tourist activities, but why not try living like a local? Engage with local culture this time around.

We’re here with a few tips that can help you live like a local while you have fun away from home. Read on to learn more.

Look Beyond Tourist Traps

There’s nothing wrong with visiting tourist traps when you’re traveling. After all, you’re on vacation! Even locals enjoy occasional “staycation” tourist days.

With that in mind, you won’t be living like a local if you only visit tourist traps. You’re closing yourself off to all of the things that the area has to offer.

Look for things to do that aren’t as widely advertised. If it comes up on the first page of Google, it’s likely not something that locals do in their free time.

Skip Hotels

In many cases, hotels and hostels are the most viable and convenient options for travelers. If possible, however, try to find local accommodation.

An increasingly popular way to travel without opting for hotels is house swapping. When you house swap, you visit someone else’s home while they visit yours.

For example, let’s say you want to spend a week in Vancouver, but your home is in New Jersey. You’ll find someone in Vancouver that wants to travel to New Jersey and swap homes with them.

This is a low-cost option that allows you to see new things in a comfortable environment. You’ll be living like a local because you’ll be in a local’s home.

Eat Local Foods

We get it. When you’re on vacation, sometimes you just want to grab some fast food at the end of a long day. It’s cheap and you know what to expect.

The common alternative for travelers is to find the best of the best. They visit the fanciest restaurants for the highest quality meals.

There’s nothing wrong with either of these options, but if you really want to live like a local, eat local food.

Stay Open to New Friendships

While you’re traveling, take advantage of social opportunities. See if you can meet new local friends. You can do this in several ways.

First, make yourself visible in local bars, pubs, and even parks. If you’re in a social environment, you’ll attract people who want to socialize. Many people are friendly to travelers.

Live Like a Local With These Tips

Use these tips to live like a local wherever you go. Whether you’re traveling within your own country or going abroad, you’ll be able to “do as the locals do” and have a lot of fun.
