How to Be Productive Without Succumbing to Toxic Hustle Culture

Lifestyle

23 Mar

Everyone wants to fulfil their potential in life. No matter what your goals might be or in which direction you are headed, it seems logical to strive for the very best. Anything less is considered unworthy of your efforts or praise, so why try if you can’t achieve highly? This mentality falls into the trap of black and white thinking, where you fail to see the shades of grey in a situation and assume the all or nothing approach. It is inherently flawed since this way of thinking actually inhibits your ability to make the necessary mistakes it takes to reach your goals. Hustle culture is guilty of promoting this unhelpful way of thinking.

What is Hustle Culture?

You might have heard about hustle culture online through social media. Influencers perpetuate the myth that constant hard work and never letting up is the only way to achieve your goals. For a small minority, this may work, but overall the act of relentlessly pushing yourself to your physical and mental extremes only leads to burn-out. What hustle culture fails to see is the value in variety and periods of rest in your life and how these too can help you achieve your goals.

The Desire to be Productive

Society has increasingly become obsessed with the idea of attaching a person’s value to their productivity. If someone is seen to barely sleep yet also attend the gym regularly and put in overtime at work, they are considered successful and admirable. Of course, hard work is valuable, but without making room for other important aspects of life, then it becomes work for the sake of work.

Staying Calm

There’s an underlying anxious energy to hustle culture. This belief that your dreams might run away from you if you take a moment to pause is not healthy or, ironically, productive. What does work when pushing for your goals is reminding yourself of the value of a calm mind. Whether you achieve this through meditation, therapy, or the use of a full spectrum CBD tincture, keeping a peaceful mind will make it easier to concentrate on your dreams.

Setting Realistic Goals

Another unhealthy aspect of hustle culture that has seeped into contemporary society is the drive towards unattainable goals. Luxury yachts, sprawling mansions, and flights on a private jet are not necessarily part of your personal dream, but somehow you are made to feel like a failure for not obtaining these things. Perfectionism and the desire to be the best will only make you feel worse.

Satisfaction and Gratitude

Instead of eyeing up what other people have – or, at least, what they claim to have – practice gratitude for what is already in your life. You’d be surprised at how effective the act of simply reflecting on the good parts of life can be for your mental health and clarity. Even if you do have some tough goals you want to achieve, take time to appreciate where you are right now.
