Everything You’ll Need for Your First Surf Trip

Lifestyle

22 Jul

About four hundred thousand surfboards are sold annually in the US as many surfing enthusiasts are racing into the water. Surfing is a great sport that will test your limits. Like in any sport, you have to be in physical shape and prepared with the right gear.

You don’t need a ton of specialized gear, but without the essentials, you won’t have a good and safe time. If you are about to go on your first surfing trip, then this guide is for you.

Before heading down to the coast, here are all the things you need to have for your first surf trip.

Travel Insurance for a Surf Trip

No matter how experienced you are, accidents can happen when you go surfing. Travel insurance will protect you in case of any accidents or injuries that may occur while you are surfing.

A First Aid Kit is Vital

Fill your kit with bandages, antibiotic ointment, pain relief medication, and anything else you think you might need. Packing sunscreen is also a good idea to add for your surfing gear as you’ll spend a lot of time in the sun.

Bring a Good Surfboard

You can rent one at your destination or bring your own from home. If you’re planning on renting, call ahead to reserve a board. If you’re getting your own, ensure you have a perfect surfboard bag to protect your investment.

There is also various surfing equipment you need for your travels. There are those used to maintain your surfboard and store it properly.

Choose a Proper Wetsuit

A wetsuit is essential to protect you from the elements and provide warmth in cold water. A wetsuit should fit snugly but not too tight and allow you to move without problems.

You can wear a rash guard or swim shirt under your wetsuit for additional sun protection. Also, wear board shorts or a swimsuit over your wetsuit for more protection.

Bring a Leash for Your Surfboard

A leash is a cord that attaches your surfboard to your ankle and is an important safety device. If you get separated from your board, the leash will prevent it from floating away and getting lost.

It’s also essential to choose the right size leash for your board. A leash that’s too long can be challenging to control, and a leash that’s too short can be uncomfortable.

Take Pictures With a Waterproof Camera

A waterproof camera is an essential tool for any surfer. It allows you to document your waves, progress, and wipeouts! When shopping for a waterproof camera, buy one that is durable and can withstand pressure or rubbed against sand and surfboard wax.

Don’t Forget to Bring Snacks

You will need energy to paddle out on your surf trip, so having snacks on hand will help you stay fueled. Pack easy-to-eat items like granola bars, fruit, nuts, and trail mix.

Don’t forget to pack drinks to stay hydrated. Water is essential, but you may also want to pack electrolyte-rich beverages like coconut water or sports drinks.

Be Prepared For Your First Wave

If you’re planning your first surf trip, you’ll need to bring the right gear and supplies. Ensure you have an excellent surfboard, wetsuit, sunscreen, and water. Don’t forget to pack snacks and a first-aid kit. Make sure to have fun and enjoy the waves!
