An international crisis has had us stuck indoors for over three months. Since the corona virus has struck each nation each country has had to undergo unparalleled restrictions to their movements along with who they can see.
Understandably there have been huge numbers of reported mental health issues related to this pandemic as a result of the disruption caused to people’s lifestyle, their communities and their finances.
Without overlooking the difficulties some are facing over Covid-19, taking a small measure of control over the situation can alleviate some amount of the stress. Using this pent up frustration for something productive can be a tonic for our time in quarantine.
Through some very affordable measures, Interior designer William Seegmiller offers some small affordable measures into improving our domestic aesthetics whilst keeping us bust at the same time.
Here are a few ideas he has come up with.
Paint cupboard doors.
Utilize those old few tins of paint left in the shed and put them to good use. Applying a few fresh coats of paint to kitchen doors and cupboards can be a pleasant and methodical afternoon spent in brightening up a room.
It’s always important to degrease any surface especially if you are working in the kitchen since paint can repel from grease. And always remember to lightly sand the surface in order to provide a key for the paint to adhere to. Water based paint is useful as a primer so ensure to apply this first before anything oil based. An egg shell makes for an ideal durable surface for a working environment.
Experiment with color and don’t be afraid for something bright and loud if the palette of colors in the room are relatively mute.
Vinyl sticker white goods.
Another simple intervention with a small cost is to have some vinyl adhesives made for white goods in the kitchen. Depending on how computer literate you are, you can add any image to a fridge or dishwasher to add a bespoke look to your kitchen.
There are a range of royalty-free patterns available across various sites and vinyl cutting services have made it easy to transfer files through FTP sites.
It is advised to go for sparse designs if the size of the kitchen is small and inversely if your kitchen is large, a more vibrant and striking pattern can suit the space.
When applying, mark a centre point on the adhesive and on the surface you are working on. Align both tighter and pull down the protective layer behind. Using a credit card, smooth out the surface working from the centre outwards.
Rearrange Hanging space.
Incredibly this small alteration at home is affective as it is affordable. It’s simply costs nothing.
Taking a moment to gather up all framed pictures on your wall, look for a link between each image and curate your walls as if telling a story. A simple historically ordered arrangement could suffice or even color coded if you felt it added something to the room. This simple exercise can remind you stories and be a meditative session on one’s memories.
